Safari PDF Floating Controls on macOS Explained

This article provides a complete breakdown of the floating control bar that appears at the bottom of the screen when viewing a PDF document in the Safari web browser on macOS. By moving your cursor toward the bottom center of an open PDF, Safari reveals a translucent heads-up display (HUD) containing four quick-action buttons designed to help you resize, transfer, and save the document without navigating through top-level browser menus.

When you hover your pointer over the lower area of a PDF in Safari, the floating control bar fades into view. From left to right, here are the exact controls that appear and what they do:

1. Zoom Out (Minus Icon) The leftmost button features a minus sign (-) inside a magnifying glass or standalone icon. Clicking this button decreases the magnification of the PDF, allowing you to see more of the page at once.

2. Zoom In (Plus Icon) Located directly to the right of the Zoom Out button, this control features a plus sign (+). Clicking this button increases the magnification of the PDF, making text and details larger and easier to read. If you zoom in or out manually, a temporary button may also appear nearby allowing you to reset the view to "Auto-Scale" so the document fits the browser window again.

3. Open in Preview (Preview App Icon) The third button displays the icon for the native macOS Preview application (which looks like a snapshot loupe or magnifying glass over a picture). Clicking this button instantly transfers the PDF out of Safari and opens it directly inside the macOS Preview app. This is the quickest way to access advanced PDF tools, such as highlighting text, adding signatures, or rearranging pages.

4. Download (Downward Arrow Icon) The final button on the far right is a circle containing a downward-pointing arrow. Clicking this button immediately downloads and saves a copy of the PDF document to your Mac's default Downloads folder.

Behavior of the Floating Bar The floating controls are designed to be unobtrusive. If you stop moving your mouse cursor for a few seconds, or if you move the cursor away from the bottom of the screen to read the document, the bar will automatically fade away so it does not block the text. Simply moving the mouse again will make the controls reappear.
