Restore Closed Safari Tabs and Windows After Relaunching
Accidentally quitting the Safari web browser or closing an important window can disrupt your workflow, especially if you had multiple research tabs open. Fortunately, Safari includes built-in recovery features within its History menu that allow you to quickly restore individual tabs, specific windows, or your entire previous browsing session even after you have completely quit and relaunched the application. This guide walks you through the exact steps to recover your lost browsing sessions effortlessly.
Reopen Your Entire Last Session
If you accidentally quit Safari or your computer restarted, the fastest way to get everything back is to restore your entire previous session.
- Launch the Safari app on your Mac.
- Click on History in the top menu bar at the top of your screen.
- Select Reopen All Windows from Last Session from the drop-down menu.
All the non-private windows and tabs that were open right before you quit the browser will immediately reappear.
Recover Specific Recently Closed Windows or Tabs
If you closed a window or a set of tabs before quitting Safari, "Reopen All Windows from Last Session" might not bring them back. Instead, you should use the "Recently Closed" list.
- Open Safari.
- Click on History in the top menu bar.
- Hover your cursor over Recently Closed.
- A submenu will appear showing a list of individual tabs and windows (windows are listed by the number of tabs they contained, such as "5 Tabs").
- Click on the specific tab or window group you want to restore.
Reopen the Very Last Closed Item
If you only need to recover the exact last tab or window you closed prior to quitting, you can use the quick-restore option.
- Open Safari.
- Click History in the top menu bar.
- Click Reopen Last Closed Tab or Reopen Last Closed Window (the text changes depending on what you closed last).
- Alternatively, you can press Command + Shift + T on your keyboard to instantly reopen the last closed item. You can press this shortcut multiple times to reopen items in the reverse order they were closed.
Prevent Future Loss Automatically
To avoid having to use the History menu every time you accidentally quit the browser, you can configure Safari to automatically restore your tabs upon launch.
- With Safari open, click Safari in the top menu bar.
- Select Settings (or Preferences on older macOS versions).
- Click the General tab.
- Click the drop-down menu next to Safari opens with.
- Select All non-private windows from last session.
Moving forward, quitting and relaunching Safari will automatically bring you right back to where you left off. Note that for privacy reasons, Safari does not record history for Private Browsing windows, meaning private tabs cannot be recovered once closed.
