Navigating Safari History with Two-Finger Swipe Gestures
This article provides a complete guide on how two-finger swipe gestures on an Apple Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse allow you to navigate backward and forward through your browsing history in Safari. It covers the physical mechanics of the gestures, the visual feedback provided by the browser, and how to enable or customize these settings in macOS.
How the Swipe Gesture Works
In Safari, multi-touch gestures mimic the physical interaction of sliding sheets of paper across a desk. Instead of moving your cursor to click the Back or Forward arrows in the browser toolbar, you can place two fingers on the surface of your Magic Trackpad or Magic Mouse and slide them horizontally.
- To go backward in your history: Place two fingers on the surface and swipe to the right. This pulls the previous webpage from the left side of the screen into your current view.
- To go forward in your history: Place two fingers on the surface and swipe to the left. This pulls the next webpage from the right side of the screen back into view.
Visual Feedback and Caching
When you execute a two-finger swipe in Safari, the browser uses a fluid animation to confirm the action. As your fingers move across the trackpad or mouse, the active webpage physically slides along with your fingers, revealing a snapshot of the previous or next webpage underneath.
If you begin a swipe and change your mind, you can simply swipe back in the opposite direction without lifting your fingers to cancel the navigation and remain on the current page. Because Safari caches the visual state of your recently visited pages, using the swipe gesture often loads the previous page instantaneously, returning you to the exact scroll position you left.
Configuring the Magic Trackpad
By default, the two-finger swipe for page navigation is enabled on the Magic Trackpad. If the gesture is not working, or if you want to adjust how it behaves, you can change it in your system settings:
- Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).
- Click Trackpad in the sidebar.
- Select the More Gestures tab at the top of the window.
- Locate the Swipe between pages setting.
- Click the drop-down menu next to it and select Scroll left or right with two fingers (or Swipe with two or three fingers, depending on your preference).
Configuring the Magic Mouse
Out of the box, the Magic Mouse uses a one-finger swipe to navigate between pages in Safari, reserving the two-finger swipe for switching between full-screen applications and Desktop Spaces. However, you can easily configure the Magic Mouse to use the two-finger gesture for Safari history navigation instead:
- Open System Settings from the Apple menu.
- Click Mouse in the sidebar.
- Select the More Gestures tab.
- Locate the Swipe between pages setting.
- Change the drop-down menu to Swipe left or right with two fingers or Scroll left or right with one finger, or with two fingers.
Note that if you assign the two-finger swipe to Safari page navigation on the Magic Mouse, the gesture to swipe between full-screen apps will automatically be disabled to prevent gesture conflicts.
