Managing Camera, Mic, and Location Settings in Safari
This article provides a straightforward guide on how to manage per-website permissions in the Safari web browser. You will learn how to customize access to your device's camera, microphone, and location services by setting specific websites to always allow, always deny, or prompt you for permission each time. Whether you are using a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, these steps will help you quickly take control of your privacy and browser functionality.
Managing Website Settings on a Mac
On a Mac, you can manage permissions for individual websites through the main Safari settings menu or directly from the active webpage you are visiting.
Using the Safari Settings Menu
This method allows you to view and change permissions for both currently open websites and websites you have configured in the past.
- Open the Safari browser.
- Click Safari in the top-left menu bar and select Settings (or Preferences on older macOS versions).
- Click the Websites tab at the top of the window.
- In the left-hand sidebar, select Camera, Microphone, or Location.
- Locate the website you want to modify in the list on the right.
- Click the drop-down menu next to the website's name and select Ask, Deny, or Allow.
- To set the default behavior for any new websites you visit in the future, use the When visiting other websites drop-down menu in the bottom-right corner of the window.
Using the Active Webpage
If you are currently on the website you wish to configure, you can adjust its specific permissions without opening the main settings window.
- Go to the website you want to manage in Safari.
- Click Safari in the top-left menu bar and select Settings for [Website Name]. Alternatively, you can Control-click (or right-click) the website URL in the address bar to find this option.
- A small pop-up menu will appear over the webpage.
- Locate Camera, Microphone, and Location in the list.
- Click the drop-down menu next to each service and choose Ask, Deny, or Allow.
- Click anywhere outside the pop-up menu to close it and apply your changes.
Managing Website Settings on iPhone and iPad
On iOS and iPadOS devices, you can customize permissions for a specific website directly from the Safari address bar, or manage your default permissions through the main device settings.
Configuring a Specific Website in Safari
- Open the Safari app and go to the website you want to manage.
- Tap the Page Settings icon on the left side of the address bar (this icon looks like aA or a rectangle with two horizontal lines, depending on your iOS version).
- Tap Website Settings in the menu that appears. (If you do not see it immediately, tap the three-dot menu icon first).
- Under the permissions section, tap Camera, Microphone, or Location.
- Select Ask, Deny, or Allow according to your preference.
- Tap Done in the top-right corner of the menu to save the settings for that website.
Setting Default Permissions for All Websites
If you want to change the default rule for how Safari handles camera, microphone, and location requests across all unconfigured websites on your mobile device:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Scroll down and tap Safari (on iOS 18 and later, go to Apps first, then tap Safari).
- Scroll down to the Settings for Websites section.
- Tap Camera, Microphone, or Location.
- Choose Ask, Deny, or Allow to set the global default for all websites.
