Manage Safari Reading List Items Using Swipe Gestures

This article provides a quick overview of how to efficiently manage your Safari Reading List using simple swipe gestures. By swiping left or right directly on items within the Safari sidebar, you can quickly mark articles as read, unread, or remove them entirely without ever having to open and load the webpage.

Accessing the Reading List Sidebar

Before you can use swipe gestures, you need to view your Reading List.

  1. Open the Safari web browser.
  2. Click or tap the Sidebar button in the top-left corner of the window.
  3. Select Reading List (the eyeglasses icon) from the menu options.

How to Mark an Item as Read or Unread

You can change the read status of an article using a right-swipe gesture. This works on a Mac using a trackpad or Magic Mouse, and on an iPad or iPhone using your finger.

  • Swipe Right Partially: Place two fingers on your trackpad (or one finger on a touchscreen/Magic Mouse) and swipe slightly from left to right over the Reading List item. Click or tap the blue Mark as Read (or Mark as Unread) button that appears.
  • Swipe Right Completely: Swipe all the way from left to right across the item to immediately toggle its read or unread status without needing to click the button.

How to Remove an Item

If you want to delete an item from your Reading List without opening the link, use a left-swipe gesture.

  • Swipe Left Partially: Swipe slightly from right to left across the Reading List item. This will reveal a red Remove button. Click or tap Remove to delete the item from your list. (On iPhone and iPad, this gesture also reveals an option to save the article for offline reading).
  • Swipe Left Completely: Swipe all the way from right to left across the item to instantly delete it from your Reading List.
