How to Open External Links in a Specific Safari Profile
This article explains how to configure the Safari web browser on Mac, iPhone, and iPad to automatically open links from external applications in a specific Profile. By leveraging Apple's built-in Focus Filters, managing active window states, or utilizing third-party routing tools on macOS, users can ensure clicked links always open in their preferred workspace.
Method 1: Use Focus Filters (Native Automatic Method)
Apple natively ties automatic Safari Profile routing to the Focus feature. By adding a Safari Focus Filter, you explicitly tell the operating system which profile to use as the default when clicking links outside of the browser.
On Mac:
- Open System Settings and click Focus in the sidebar.
- Select an existing Focus mode (such as Work or Personal) or create a new one.
- Scroll down to the Focus Filters section at the bottom and click Add Filter.
- Select Safari from the application list.
- Click the Default Profile dropdown menu and choose the specific Safari Profile you want to use for external links.
- Click Add.
On iPhone and iPad:
- Open the Settings app and tap Focus.
- Tap on the Focus mode you want to configure.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Add Filter under the Focus Filters section.
- Select Safari.
- Tap Profile, choose your desired Safari Profile from the list, and tap Add in the top right corner.
Whenever this specific Focus mode is active on your device, any link you click in an external app—such as Mail, Messages, or Slack—will automatically open in the designated Safari Profile. You can automate this further by setting your Focus mode to turn on automatically based on the time of day, your location, or when you open specific apps.
Method 2: Manage Active Window Priority (Without Focus Modes)
If you do not have a Focus Filter active, Safari relies on a simple default rule: external links always open in the most recently used Safari window.
To control where links open without configuring system settings, follow this workflow:
- Open Safari and switch to the Profile you want external links to use.
- Leave this window open on your screen (do not minimize it or close it).
- Click once inside this Safari window to ensure macOS registers it as your last active browser window.
- Switch to your external application and click your link. Safari will route the link to the active profile window you just interacted with.
Method 3: Use a Third-Party Link Router (macOS Only)
If you want external links to open in a specific Safari Profile permanently without keeping a Focus mode turned on, or if you want to route links based on which app you clicked them in, you must use a third-party link routing utility. Mac apps like Velja or Choosy support Safari Profiles and allow for rule-based routing.
- Download and install a link routing app that supports Safari Profiles (such as Velja from the Mac App Store).
- Open System Settings, click Desktop & Dock, and change the Default web browser to your new link routing app.
- Open the link routing app's settings and set Safari as your primary target browser.
- Create a custom rule inside the app. You can configure it so that all links clicked inside a specific app (like Microsoft Teams) or links matching a specific domain (like google.com) are automatically sent to your chosen Safari Profile.
- When the app asks for the profile name, enter the exact name of your Safari Profile to complete the automation.
