How to Launch Safari Without Reopening Old Tabs on macOS

This article provides a quick and effective method for macOS users to launch the Safari web browser with a clean slate. By utilizing the Shift key during the application's startup process, you can easily prevent previous windows and problematic tabs from automatically reopening, ensuring a fresh browsing session and resolving potential browser crash loops.

Step 1: Completely Quit Safari

For the Shift key shortcut to work, Safari must be completely closed and not just minimized.

  1. Locate the Safari icon in your Dock.
  2. If you see a small dot underneath the icon, the browser is still running in the background.
  3. Click on the Safari icon to bring it into focus, then press Command + Q on your keyboard. Alternatively, right-click (or Control-click) the Safari icon in the Dock and select Quit.

If Safari is frozen, press Option + Command + Esc to open the Force Quit Applications window, select Safari, and click Force Quit.

Step 2: Hold the Shift Key and Launch

Once Safari is completely closed, you can override its default startup behavior.

  1. Press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard.
  2. While keeping the Shift key held down, click the Safari icon in the Dock, Launchpad, or Applications folder.
  3. Continue holding the Shift key until the Safari window appears on your screen.
  4. Release the Shift key.

Safari will now open with a single, fresh window, completely bypassing any windows or tabs you had open during your last session.

Why Use This Method?

Holding the Shift key during launch temporarily overrides the macOS "Reopen windows when logging back in" and Safari's "Safari opens with: All windows from last session" settings. This is particularly useful in two scenarios:

  • Privacy: You are opening your browser in front of others and do not want your previous browsing session immediately visible on the screen.
  • Troubleshooting: A specific webpage from your last session is causing Safari to freeze or crash immediately upon opening. Bypassing the session load allows you to regain control of the browser and clear your history or cache if needed.
