How to Automatically Clear Safari's Downloads List

This article provides a straightforward guide on how to configure the Safari web browser to automatically clear its Downloads list. You will learn the exact steps to set Safari on both Mac and iOS devices to remove downloaded items from the list after one day, immediately upon a successful download, or when you quit the browser. Adjusting this setting keeps your browser interface clutter-free without deleting the actual downloaded files from your device's storage.

Configuring Safari on a Mac

To change when download entries are removed on macOS, you need to access Safari's internal settings.

  1. Open the Safari browser on your Mac.
  2. Click Safari in the top-left menu bar.
  3. Select Settings (or Preferences on older versions of macOS) from the dropdown menu.
  4. Click the General tab at the top of the settings window.
  5. Locate the Remove download list items dropdown menu near the bottom.
  6. Click the menu and select one of the following automatic options:
    • After one day: Automatically clears the item from the list 24 hours after the download finishes.
    • When Safari quits: Clears the entire list every time you completely close the Safari application.
    • Upon successful download: Removes the item from the list the exact moment the file finishes downloading.

Close the settings window to save your changes automatically.

Configuring Safari on iPhone and iPad

On iOS and iPadOS, Safari settings are managed through the main device settings rather than inside the browser app itself. Note that the "When Safari quits" option is not available on mobile devices.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Scroll down and tap Safari.
  3. Scroll down to the General section and tap Downloads.
  4. Tap Remove Download List Items.
  5. Select your preferred automatic setting:
    • After one day: Removes the entry 24 hours after the download is complete.
    • Upon successful download: Clears the entry immediately after the file is downloaded.

Important Note on Downloaded Files

Changing these settings only affects the history list inside the Safari browser. Automatically removing an item from the Downloads list does not delete the actual file from your system. Your downloaded files will remain safely stored in your Mac's Downloads folder or within the Files app on your iPhone or iPad until you manually delete them.
