How to Auto-Close Inactive Safari Tabs on iOS

This article provides a quick and easy guide on how to configure the Safari web browser on iOS to automatically close inactive tabs. By adjusting a single setting on your iPhone or iPad, you can set your browser to clear out old, unused tabs after one day, one week, or one month, keeping your browsing experience organized and your device running smoothly.

Users can configure Safari to automatically close inactive tabs directly through the iOS Settings app. Instead of manually swiping away dozens of forgotten webpages, you can instruct your device to close them based on how long they have been sitting idle.

Follow these steps to locate and change the tab configuration on your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Safari. (If you have updated to iOS 18 or later, scroll to the bottom of the main Settings menu, tap Apps, and then select Safari).
  3. Scroll down until you find the Tabs section.
  4. Tap on Close Tabs, which is set to "Manually" by default.
  5. Select your preferred timeframe from the menu:
    • After One Day
    • After One Week
    • After One Month

Once you make your selection, the setting is saved automatically, and you can exit the Settings app.

Safari will now track the last time you actively viewed each open tab. If you do not interact with a specific tab for the duration you selected, the browser will automatically close it in the background. If you ever want to stop Safari from closing your tabs, simply return to the Close Tabs menu and switch the setting back to Manually.
