Deleting a Safari Profile: What Happens to Your Data?
This article provides a quick overview of what happens to your digital footprint when you delete a custom Profile in Apple's Safari web browser. It covers the immediate and permanent removal of your browsing history, cookies, website data, and open tabs associated with that specific profile, while clarifying which broader browser elements remain untouched across your synced Apple devices.
When you delete a custom profile in Safari, the action is permanent and cannot be undone. Safari treats each profile as a separate container for your browsing activity, meaning the deletion process aggressively cleans out the data tied to that specific space.
Browsing History is Permanently Erased All browsing history recorded while using the custom profile is immediately and permanently deleted. You will no longer see these visited pages in your History menu, nor will they appear as suggestions in the Safari Smart Search field on your remaining profiles.
Website Data and Cookies are Wiped Deleting a profile completely clears all associated website data. This includes:
- Cookies: Any tracking or preference cookies stored by websites within that profile are destroyed.
- Cached Files: Images, scripts, and other site data saved to speed up loading times are removed from your device's storage.
- Login Sessions: Because cookies and local storage are erased, you are effectively logged out of all websites you were signed into within that profile.
- Website Settings: Specific permissions granted to websites inside that profile, such as access to your camera, microphone, or location, are reset.
Tabs and Tab Groups are Closed Every open tab and any unnamed or named Tab Groups created inside the custom profile are closed and deleted. You cannot recover these tabs from the "Recently Closed Tabs" list in your default Personal profile.
iCloud Sync Removes the Data Everywhere If you use iCloud to sync Safari across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad, deleting a profile on one device deletes it everywhere. The associated history and website data will be wiped from all devices signed into the same Apple ID.
What is Not Deleted While history and website data are destroyed, a few items survive the deletion of a Safari profile because they are stored globally rather than strictly inside the profile container:
- Bookmarks: Even if you set a specific bookmark folder as your "Favorites" for a custom profile, deleting the profile does not delete the folder or the bookmarks inside it. They remain accessible in your main Bookmarks menu.
- Saved Passwords: Passwords saved while using a custom profile are stored in your system-wide iCloud Keychain (or the Passwords app). They will remain completely intact and accessible after the profile is gone.
- Web Extensions: Extensions are installed globally in Safari. While the specific settings and permissions you configured for an extension within the deleted profile are erased, the extension itself remains installed and available for your other profiles.
- Downloaded Files: Any files, documents, or images you downloaded to your device's local storage or iCloud Drive while using the profile will remain in your Downloads folder.
