Arranging Multiple Safari Windows in 3D on Apple Vision Pro
This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to open, position, and manage multiple floating Safari browser windows in three-dimensional space using the Apple Vision Pro. By utilizing simple eye-tracking and hand-gesture controls in visionOS, you can easily transform your physical room into a customizable, multi-screen virtual workspace.
Opening Multiple Safari Windows
Before arranging your workspace, you need to generate separate browser windows rather than just using standard browser tabs. There are two straightforward ways to do this:
- Drag a Tab Out: Open Safari and look at the tab bar at the top of the window. Look directly at a specific tab, pinch your thumb and index finger together to grab it, and pull your hand away from the main Safari window. Release your pinch, and that tab will become its own independent window.
- Use the New Window Button: Look at the top-left corner of an active Safari window to reveal the sidebar and window controls. Tap the new window icon (represented by a plus sign inside a rectangle) to spawn a fresh floating browser.
- Use Siri: Simply say, "Siri, open a new Safari window," and a new browser instance will appear in front of you.
Moving Windows in 3D Space
Once you have multiple Safari windows open, you can place them anywhere in your room, and they will stay anchored to those physical locations.
- Locate the Window Bar: Look directly below any Safari window to find a horizontal white line. This is the window bar.
- Pinch and Hold: Look at the window bar, then pinch your thumb and index finger together and hold them closed.
- Move Horizontally and Vertically: While holding the pinch, move your hand left, right, up, or down. You can place a window high near your ceiling, next to you over a couch, or directly above your physical desk.
- Adjust Depth (Z-Axis): While still pinching the window bar, push your hand forward to push the window deeper into the room, or pull your hand backward to bring the window closer to your face. The Apple Vision Pro will automatically scale the window's size to keep text readable at a distance.
- Lock in Place: Release your fingers to drop the window into its new three-dimensional spot. It will automatically angle itself to face you.
Resizing Your Browser Windows
To make the most of your 3D space, you may want some Safari windows to be wide for watching videos and others to be narrow for reading articles or monitoring feeds.
- Look at the bottom-left or bottom-right corner of a Safari window.
- A curved white line will appear hugging the corner.
- Pinch and hold this corner handle, then drag your hand outward to expand the window or inward to shrink it.
- Release your pinch when the window is at your desired dimensions.
Managing and Resetting Your Layout
As you place windows all around your room, you might occasionally lose track of one or change your seating position.
- Re-orienting a Single Window: If you walk to a different part of the room, a window will still be angled toward your old seat. Look at its window bar, pinch it briefly, and pull it slightly toward you to make it pivot and face your new position.
- Recentering All Windows: If you want to bring all your scattered Safari windows back to your immediate field of view, press and hold the Digital Crown (the dial on the top-right of the headset). All open windows will instantly snap back into a neat, organized cluster directly in front of where you are currently looking.
- Closing a Window: To remove a Safari window from your 3D space, look at the white dot to the left of the window bar at the bottom of the browser. It will turn into an "X" button. Tap your fingers together to close that specific window.
