Apple Intelligence Safari Summarization Requirements
This article provides a complete overview of the hardware, operating system, and device configuration requirements needed to use the Apple Intelligence article summarization feature inside the Safari web browser. Because Apple Intelligence relies on advanced on-device processing, only specific modern iPhones, iPads, and Macs running the latest operating systems are capable of generating these AI-powered web summaries.
Operating System Requirements
To access the Summarize feature in Safari Reader, your device must be updated to at least the following operating system versions, which officially introduced Apple Intelligence:
- iPhone: iOS 18.1 or later
- iPad: iPadOS 18.1 or later
- Mac: macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later
Hardware Requirements
Apple Intelligence requires a minimum of 8GB of RAM and a powerful Neural Engine to process summaries locally on your device. Therefore, the feature is strictly limited to devices with an A17 Pro chip, an A18-series chip, or an M-series Apple Silicon chip.

Additional Device Requirements
Having the correct hardware and operating system is not enough to automatically trigger the summarization feature in Safari. You must also meet the following system criteria:
- Opt-In Activation: You must manually enable Apple Intelligence by going to the Settings app (or System Settings on Mac), selecting the Apple Intelligence & Siri menu, and opting into the service.
- Storage Space: Your device must have at least 4GB to 7GB of free local storage space to download and store the required on-device Apple Intelligence models.
- Language Settings: Both your device language and your Siri language must be set to the same supported language (such as U.S. English, with additional localized English and international languages supported in iOS 18.2 and later).
- Safari Reader Compatibility: The webpage you are viewing must be compatible with Safari’s Reader view, as the Summarize button only appears at the top of the screen after entering Reader mode.
