Shortcut to Close Active Tab in Paint.NET

Managing multiple open images in Paint.NET can quickly clutter your workspace. This guide identifies the standard keyboard shortcuts used to instantly close the currently active image tab, explains how they function, and details how the software handles unsaved work to keep your workflow efficient and organized.

The Primary Keyboard Shortcut

The default keyboard shortcut to close the currently active image tab in Paint.NET is:

  • Ctrl + W

Alternatively, you can also use:

  • Ctrl + F4

Both key combinations perform the exact same function: closing only the image currently visible on your canvas without closing the entire Paint.NET application.

How to Use the Shortcut

  1. Click on or switch to the image tab you wish to close to ensure it is active.
  2. Press and hold the Ctrl key.
  3. Press the W key (or F4), then release both keys.

Handling Unsaved Changes

If the active image has no pending modifications, the tab will close immediately.

If you have made edits that are not yet saved, Paint.NET will pause the closing process and display a confirmation prompt with three choices:

  • Save: Saves your changes and closes the tab.
  • Don't Save: Discards any edits made since the last save and immediately closes the tab.
  • Cancel: Aborts the close command and returns you to the active workspace with all your work intact.
