Save a Selection as an Image in Paint.NET
While Paint.NET does not feature a single-click "Export Selection" button, you can easily save a specific selection as an independent image file without affecting your original project. This guide outlines the two fastest methods to achieve this: using the "Paste into New Image" command and using the "Crop to Selection" feature.
Method 1: Paste into a New Image (Recommended)
This is the cleanest and safest method because it immediately isolates your selection on a new canvas without altering your current working document.
- Make your selection: Use any of the selection tools (Rectangle Select, Lasso Select, or Magic Wand) to outline the portion of the image you want to save.
- Copy the selection: Press
Ctrl + Con your keyboard, or go to Edit > Copy. - Paste into a new image: Press
Ctrl + Alt + V, or go to Edit > Paste into New Image. Paint.NET will automatically generate a new canvas sized perfectly to your selection and paste the content into it. - Save the file: Switch to the new tab, press
Ctrl + S(or File > Save As), choose your desired format (such as PNG or JPEG), name your file, and click Save.
Method 2: Crop to Selection
If you prefer to work within the existing tab, you can crop the canvas directly to your selected area and save it as a new file.
- Make your selection: Select the desired area using your preferred selection tool.
- Crop the image: Press
Ctrl + Shift + X, or navigate to Image > Crop to Selection. Everything outside your selection will be removed. - Save as a new file: Press
Ctrl + Shift + S, or go to File > Save As. Ensure you provide a new file name so you do not accidentally overwrite your original image. - Restore the original canvas: After saving, press
Ctrl + Zto undo the crop and restore your original workspace to its previous state.
