Paste into New Layer Shortcut in Paint.NET
In Paint.NET, you can quickly insert an image or selection from your clipboard directly into a brand-new layer using a dedicated keyboard shortcut. Rather than manually creating a layer and pasting the content, this single command streamlines your workflow by handling both actions at once.
The keyboard shortcut to paste clipboard contents as a new layer in Paint.NET is:
Ctrl + Shift + V
How to Use the Shortcut
- Copy any image, graphic, or pixel selection to your clipboard from Paint.NET, your web browser, or another program (using Ctrl + C).
- Open or switch to your project in Paint.NET.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + V.
Paint.NET will automatically generate a new layer placed above your currently active layer and paste the clipboard contents directly onto it. If the image on your clipboard is larger than your current canvas dimensions, Paint.NET will display a prompt asking whether you want to expand the canvas size or keep the current size and crop the pasted image.
Menu Alternative
If you prefer using the mouse, you can achieve the exact same result through the program menus:
- Click on Edit in the top menu bar.
- Select Paste into New Layer.
Using this function ensures your existing layers remain untouched and editable, preventing accidental merges with your background or other elements.
