Paint.NET Text Tool Shortcut

Using keyboard shortcuts in Paint.NET significantly speeds up your image editing workflow. This guide explains the specific keyboard shortcut required to select the Text tool instantly, how to use it properly, and key considerations to keep in mind while adding text to your projects.

The shortcut to select the Text tool in Paint.NET is the T key.

Pressing T on your keyboard immediately switches your active tool to the Text tool, allowing you to click anywhere on the canvas to begin typing.

How to Use the Shortcut Effectively

  1. Activate the Tool: Press T on your keyboard. The cursor icon will change to an "I-beam" with a crosshair, and the Text tool will be highlighted in the Tools window.
  2. Select or Create a Layer: Always create a new layer (shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + N) before typing. Paint.NET renders text as pixels once finalized; placing text on its own layer ensures you can move or edit the layer without damaging the background image.
  3. Click and Type: Click anywhere on your canvas to place the text cursor and begin typing.
  4. Format the Text: Use the contextual toolbar at the top of the window to change the font family, font size, alignment, and rendering mode (aliased, antialiased, or ClearType).

Important Considerations

  • Active Text Entry: If your cursor is already active inside an existing text box, pressing the T key will type the letter "t" rather than trigger the tool shortcut. To switch tools while editing text, press the Esc key to commit the text first, or click outside the text boundaries.
  • Non-Vector Rendering: Paint.NET does not retain live text once you switch to another tool or click away. Make sure your spelling, font choices, and positioning are finalized before deselecting the Text tool, as you cannot re-edit typed text as editable characters later.
