Paint.NET Resampling Algorithms for Resizing Images
When resizing an image in Paint.NET, the software uses resampling algorithms to calculate how pixels are added, removed, or blended to fit the new dimensions. Paint.NET includes five primary resampling methods in its Resize dialog: Best Quality, Nearest Neighbor, Bilinear, Bicubic, and Fant. Understanding the differences between these methods ensures you choose the right balance between edge sharpness, color smoothing, and overall clarity for your specific project.
Best Quality
"Best Quality" is the default setting in modern versions of Paint.NET. Rather than applying a single fixed algorithm, it automatically selects the optimal method based on whether you are enlarging or shrinking the image. It generally uses Bicubic interpolation when upscaling and Fant when downscaling, providing the cleanest output without requiring manual configuration.
Nearest Neighbor
Nearest Neighbor is the simplest and fastest resampling algorithm. It scales an image by copying the closest existing pixel without blending colors.
- Best used for: Pixel art, retro game sprites, and graphics with sharp lines where you must avoid blurring.
- Drawback: When used on photographs or complex illustrations, it creates severe aliasing and jagged edges (pixilation).
Bilinear
Bilinear interpolation calculates the color value of new pixels by averaging the four nearest pixels in a linear fashion.
- Best used for: Fast processing on lower-end systems or when a soft, slightly blurred result is acceptable.
- Drawback: It tends to soften high-frequency details, making fine textures and text look blurry compared to higher-order algorithms.
Bicubic
Bicubic interpolation examines the 16 nearest pixels (a 4x4 grid) to generate new pixel values using cubic splines.
- Best used for: Enlarging photographs and digital paintings. It preserves gradients, curves, and fine details better than Bilinear interpolation while minimizing harsh edges.
- Drawback: It can occasionally introduce faint "halos" or slight ringing artifacts around high-contrast edges.
Fant
Fant is an algorithm specifically engineered for downsampling (reducing the dimensions of an image). It treats pixels as areas rather than single points, integrating the color values across the source pixels to determine the downscaled result.
- Best used for: Shrinking large, high-resolution photographs into smaller web-friendly dimensions while maintaining crisp details and avoiding aliasing.
- Drawback: It is not intended for image enlargement (upscaling).
How to Access These Options
To choose a resampling algorithm in Paint.NET:
- Open your image and navigate to Image in the top menu bar.
- Select Resize... (or press
Ctrl + R). - Click the Resampling dropdown menu located in the center of the dialog box.
- Choose your preferred algorithm and click OK.
