Paint.NET Minimum .NET Requirements

This article outlines the runtime dependencies for running Paint.NET, explaining the application's transition from the legacy .NET Framework to modern .NET. It details the exact versions required for the latest releases, how the runtime is delivered to users, and the requirements for legacy versions.

Modern Paint.NET Uses Modern .NET

Modern Paint.NET releases no longer use the legacy Microsoft .NET Framework. Beginning with Paint.NET 5.0, the software migrated entirely to modern .NET (formerly .NET Core). Therefore, modern versions have no dependency on the legacy .NET Framework.

The runtime requirements for current versions are:

  • Paint.NET 5.1 and newer: Requires .NET 8 (specifically the .NET Desktop Runtime).
  • Paint.NET 5.0 through 5.0.13: Requires .NET 7.

Modern releases exclusively support 64-bit operating systems (x64 and ARM64) running Windows 10 (version 1809 or newer) or Windows 11. Support for 32-bit (x86) architectures has been removed.

Installation and Runtime Delivery

For standard users, manually downloading and installing the runtime is usually unnecessary. The official Paint.NET installer comes self-contained or automatically deploys the matching Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime during the installation process. Manual installation of the .NET Desktop Runtime is typically only required when running portable or custom enterprise deployments.

Final Releases on Legacy .NET Framework

Users restricted to older hardware or legacy operating systems must use older iterations of the software:

  • Paint.NET 4.3.x: Required .NET Framework 4.7.2 (with support for .NET Framework 4.8). This was the final series built on the classic .NET Framework.
  • Paint.NET 4.0 to 4.2.x: Required .NET Framework 4.5 or higher.

For the latest features, security updates, and performance optimizations, the current 5.x release branch powered by modern .NET is required.
