Measure Pixel Dimensions in Paint.NET Status Bar

Paint.NET provides a quick, built-in way to check the exact width and height of any image selection directly through its interface. By utilizing the Status Bar located at the bottom of the workspace, you can view real-time pixel measurements of an active selection without needing external plugins, cropping the image, or opening separate property windows.

1. Ensure the Status Bar Is Enabled

Before making a selection, verify that the Status Bar is visible at the very bottom of the Paint.NET window. If it is hidden:

  • Click the View menu at the top of the screen.
  • Ensure Status Bar is checked. Alternatively, press the default toggle shortcut if configured.

2. Choose a Selection Tool

Select your preferred selection tool from the Tools palette:

  • Rectangle Select (S): Ideal for standard box-shaped areas.
  • Lasso Select (S): For freeform selections.
  • Ellipse Select (S): For circular or oval regions.

3. Make Your Selection

Click and drag on your canvas to define the area you want to measure.

4. Read the Dimensions on the Status Bar

Look at the bottom-right corner of the Paint.NET window while or after creating your selection:

  • Bounding Rectangle Size: The Status Bar displays the dimensions in the format Width x Height (for example, 450 x 300). This represents the exact pixel dimensions of the selection's bounding box.
  • Cursor Position: Directly to the left of the bounding size, you will also see the current X and Y coordinates of your cursor.

5. Adjust the Selection for Precise Measurements

If you need to resize or fine-tune the measured area:

  • Switch to the Move Selection tool (the white arrow icon in the Tools panel, shortcut M).
  • Drag the control handles along the edges of the selection outline.
  • Watch the Status Bar update the width and height values in real time as you drag the handles.
