How to View the Histogram in Paint.NET

This guide explains how to locate and view the histogram in Paint.NET to analyze an image's tonal distribution, exposure, and color channels. While Paint.NET does not feature a dedicated, standalone histogram panel on the main workspace, it integrates comprehensive histogram displays directly into its core color-correction dialogs.

Accessing the Histogram via the Levels Tool

The most detailed histogram view in Paint.NET is found within the Levels adjustment window.

  1. Open your image in Paint.NET.
  2. Click on the Adjustments menu in the top navigation bar.
  3. Select Levels... from the dropdown list, or press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + L.

Once the window opens, you will see two histogram graphs:

  • Input Histogram (Left): Displays the current distribution of shadows, midtones, and highlights across the selected layer.
  • Output Histogram (Right): Shows the projected tonal distribution based on any adjustments made using the sliders.

Customizing the Histogram View

Inside the Levels dialog, you can inspect individual color channels:

  • Locate the check boxes or the channel drop-down menu above the histograms.
  • Toggle between R (Red), G (Green), and B (Blue) to analyze specific color channels, or leave all three checked to view the combined RGB luminance.

Accessing the Histogram via the Curves Tool

You can also view a background histogram while adjusting tone curves:

  1. Click on the Adjustments menu.
  2. Select Curves..., or press Ctrl + Shift + U.
  3. Set the transfer mode to either Luminosity or RGB.

A faint histogram graph will appear behind the grid lines, allowing you to visualize pixel density as you manipulate the curve anchor points.
