How to Use Arrowheads on Lines in Paint.NET
Paint.NET provides built-in tools for drawing lines with custom terminators, including several styles of arrowheads. This article outlines where to find the arrowhead settings, the available start and end cap styles, and how line properties like width and color affect the final appearance of your arrows.
Accessing Arrowhead Settings
Arrowhead options become available in the top toolbar whenever the Line / Curve tool is selected from the Tools palette (shortcut key: O).
Look for two dropdown menus next to the line style selector:
- Start Cap: Determines the shape applied to the starting point of your stroke.
- End Cap: Determines the shape applied to the finish point of your stroke.
Both menus contain identical shape options, allowing you to create unidirectional arrows, double-sided arrows, or a line with a marker at only one end.
Available Arrowhead and Line Cap Options
Paint.NET includes several cap styles that function as arrowheads or directional markers:
- Arrow: A classic, open-backed arrowhead shape.
- Filled Arrow: A solid triangle arrowhead that fills in the space between the arrow points.
- Flat: The default setting; cuts the line off cleanly at a right angle.
- Block: Creates a square terminal cap at the end of the line.
- Round: Creates a semicircular, smooth finish on the line end.
Customizing Arrowhead Appearance
The arrowhead itself does not have an independent size slider; instead, its appearance scales dynamically based on the general line properties:
- Brush Width: Increasing the line width proportionally increases the size of the arrowhead. If you need a larger arrow point, increase the line width setting in the toolbar.
- Colors: Arrowheads adopt the current Primary or Secondary color depending on which mouse button is used to draw (Left-click for Primary, Right-click for Secondary).
- Line Style: Arrowheads can be paired with solid, dashed, or dotted lines. The dash style affects only the shaft of the line, leaving the arrowhead intact.
How to Draw and Adjust an Arrow
- Choose the Line / Curve tool from the toolbar.
- Select your desired arrowhead style from the Start Cap or End Cap dropdown menu.
- Set your desired Brush Width and color.
- Click and drag across the canvas to draw the arrow.
- Use the four on-screen control nubs to reposition the endpoints or bend the arrow shaft into a curve before committing the change (by pressing Enter or deselecting the tool).
