How to Resize Image by Width in Paint.NET
Resizing an image to a specific pixel width while preserving its proportions in Paint.NET is a straightforward process handled directly through the application's Image menu. By locking the aspect ratio, Paint.NET automatically calculates and adjusts the height to match your desired width, preventing any distortion or stretching before you export the final file.
Step 1: Open Your Image
Launch Paint.NET and open the file you wish to modify by going to File > Open or pressing Ctrl + O.
Step 2: Open the Resize Menu
Once the image is loaded on the canvas, navigate to the top menu bar and select Image > Resize, or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + R. This opens the Resize settings window.
Step 3: Lock the Aspect Ratio
Inside the Resize dialog, locate the checkbox labeled Maintain aspect ratio near the bottom-left area of the window. Ensure this box is checked. A checkmark ensures that changing the width will automatically scale the height proportionately.
Step 4: Set the Pixel Width
- In the Pixel size section at the top, select the By absolute size radio button.
- Ensure the measurement units are set to pixels.
- In the Width field, enter your desired target width.
- Observe the Height field automatically updating to maintain the original dimensions' ratio.
- In the Resampling dropdown, choose Best Quality (or Bicubic) to ensure the resized image stays sharp and clear.
Step 5: Apply the Changes
Click the OK button at the bottom of the window to apply the new dimensions to your canvas.
Step 6: Export the Resized Image
To save your resized image without overwriting your original file:
- Go to File > Save As... (or press Ctrl + Shift + S).
- Choose your preferred file format (such as PNG or JPEG) from the Save as type dropdown.
- Name your file, choose a save destination, and click Save.
- Adjust any format-specific quality settings in the final prompt, then click OK to complete the export.
