How to Reorder Layers in Paint.NET

Reordering layers in Paint.NET is a fundamental skill that allows you to control which visual elements appear in front of or behind others in your composition. This guide covers how to access the Layers window, select your target layer, and move it up or down in the stack using the built-in toolbar buttons or drag-and-drop functionality.

1. Open the Layers Window

Before moving layers, ensure the Layers window is visible on your screen.

  • If the window is not visible, press F7 on your keyboard.
  • Alternatively, click Window in the top menu bar and select Layers.

2. Select the Layer

In the Layers panel, find the layer you wish to move. Click on it once to highlight and make it the active layer.

3. Move the Layer Using the Arrow Buttons

At the bottom of the Layers window, you will see a row of utility icons.

  • Move Up: Click the Up Arrow button (Move Layer Up) to shift the selected layer one position higher in the stack. Repeat until it reaches the desired level.
  • Move Down: Click the Down Arrow button (Move Layer Down) to shift the selected layer one position lower in the stack.

4. Move the Layer Using Drag-and-Drop

In modern versions of Paint.NET, you can also reorder layers manually:

  1. Click and hold the layer you want to reposition.
  2. Drag it upward or downward to the desired spot in the list.
  3. Release the mouse button to drop the layer into its new position.
