How to Redo an Action in Paint.NET

This article explains how to quickly redo an undone action in Paint.NET using built-in keyboard shortcuts. By mastering these keystrokes, you can instantly restore changes you accidentally reverted, navigate your editing timeline efficiently, and maintain a fast, uninterrupted graphic design workflow.

The Redo Keyboard Shortcut

To redo an action that you previously undid in Paint.NET, use the following keyboard shortcut:

  • Ctrl + Y

Press and hold the Ctrl key, then press Y. Each time you press this combination, Paint.NET steps forward one action in your recent edit history, re-applying the changes in the exact order they were originally made.

Using the History Window

If you need to redo multiple actions at once rather than pressing the shortcut repeatedly, you can use the History panel:

  1. Press F3 to toggle the History window open (or click the History icon in the top-right corner of the workspace).
  2. Locate the grayed-out actions below your current point in the timeline.
  3. Click directly on any grayed-out state to jump forward to that specific edit instantly.

Important Rule Regarding Redo

The redo function only works if you have not made any new modifications after using the undo command. If you press Ctrl + Z to undo a stroke or edit, and then draw, select, or apply a new filter immediately after, the forward history is permanently erased, and you will no longer be able to redo the previous actions.
