How to Move Selected Pixels in Paint.NET

The Move Selected Pixels tool in Paint.NET allows users to isolate, reposition, resize, and rotate specific elements within an image without altering the surrounding content. This guide covers the complete process of selecting an object, activating the correct tool, moving pixels across the canvas, and deselecting to finalize your edit.

Step 1: Select the Object

Before you can move any pixels, you must define the area you want to manipulate:

  1. Choose a selection tool from the Tools palette:
    • Rectangle Select: Ideal for standard rectangular shapes.
    • Lasso Select: Best for drawing freehand boundaries around irregular objects.
    • Magic Wand: Useful for selecting continuous areas of identical or similar colors.
    • Ellipse Select: Best for circular or oval objects.
  2. Click and drag around the object you want to reposition. A animated dashed boundary (marching ants) will surround your selection.

Step 2: Activate the Move Selected Pixels Tool

  1. Open the Tools palette and select the Move Selected Pixels tool (represented by a dark arrow icon paired with a four-way directional arrow).
  2. Alternatively, press the keyboard shortcut M. If the Move Selection tool (white arrow) activates instead, press M a second time to switch to the Move Selected Pixels tool.

Note: The Move Selection tool only moves the selection boundary, whereas the Move Selected Pixels tool moves the actual image content inside the boundary.

Step 3: Reposition and Transform the Pixels

Once the tool is active, control handles will appear along the border of the selected area:

  • Move: Click and hold anywhere inside the bounding box, then drag the mouse to move the pixels to the desired location.
  • Resize: Click and drag any of the outer handles (corners or edges) to stretch or shrink the object. Hold Shift while dragging a corner handle to preserve the original aspect ratio.
  • Rotate: Right-click and drag inside the selection box to rotate the pixels around the central pivot point. Hold Shift while rotating to snap the angle to 15-degree increments.

Step 4: Finalize the Edit

  1. Release the mouse button once the object is in the correct position.
  2. Deselect the area to commit the change to your layer by pressing Ctrl + D or by clicking Edit > Deselect from the top menu bar.
