How to Merge Visible Layers to a New Layer in Paint.NET

Paint.NET does not have a single dedicated "Stamp Visible" button, but you can easily merge all visible layers into a brand-new layer without altering or flattening your original artwork. This guide explains how to use the built-in "Copy Merged" function to create a flattened snapshot of your project on its own separate layer in just a few quick steps.

Step 1: Set Your Layer Visibility

Before copying, ensure only the layers you want included are visible. Look at the Layers panel on the bottom-right of your screen. Check the box next to every layer you wish to merge, and uncheck any layers you want to exclude from the final merge.

Step 2: Select the Entire Canvas

You must select the area you wish to copy:

  • Press Ctrl + A on your keyboard (or go to the top menu and select Edit > Select All). A dotted selection border will appear around the entire canvas.

Step 3: Use the Copy Merged Command

Instead of standard copy, use the composite copy feature:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + C (or go to Edit > Copy Merged). This copies everything currently visible on the canvas to your clipboard as a single, combined image.

Step 4: Create a New Layer

Prepare the destination for your merged image:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + N (or click the Add New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers window).
  • Make sure this new empty layer is selected and placed at the top of your layer stack.

Step 5: Paste the Merged Image

Insert the copied artwork onto your new layer:

  • Press Ctrl + V (or select Edit > Paste).
  • Press Enter or Esc to deselect the canvas.

All visible elements are now combined onto this single new layer, leaving your original underlying layers completely intact and fully editable.
