How to Make Stained Glass in Paint.NET

Transforming photos or vibrant designs into stained glass patterns is straightforward in Paint.NET using built-in stylize and artistic filters. This guide outlines how to segment your canvas into mosaic glass facets, generate bold leaded lines, and enhance the overall texture for an authentic stained glass appearance.

Step 1: Prepare Your Base Image

  1. Open Paint.NET and load an image with high contrast and distinct color blocks, or create a new canvas and fill it with bold, overlapping gradients.
  2. Go to Adjustments > Hue / Saturation and increase the Saturation slider by 20–30% to give your base image the intense vibrancy typical of colored glass.

Step 2: Form the Glass Facets

  1. Navigate to Effects > Artistic > Crystallize.
  2. Adjust the Cell size slider to determine the scale of your glass pieces. A setting between 20 and 45 works well for standard-resolution images.
  3. Click OK to apply the polygonal fragmentation.

Step 3: Generate the Leaded Outlines

  1. Open the Layers panel and click Duplicate Layer to create a copy of your crystallized artwork.
  2. Ensure the top layer is selected, then navigate to Effects > Stylize > Outline.
  3. Set the Thickness to 2 or 3 to establish the width of the lead came.
  4. Set the Intensity to maximum.
  5. Invert the outlines by pressing Ctrl + Shift + I (or navigate to Adjustments > Invert Colors) so the outlines turn black against a white background.
  6. Open Layer Properties (press F4) for the top layer and change the Blend Mode to Multiply. This makes the white areas completely transparent while retaining the crisp, dark borders over your colored glass layer.

Step 4: Add Glass Texture and Highlights

  1. Select the bottom color layer.
  2. Navigate to Effects > Distort > Frosted Glass.
  3. Set a low Scatter radius (between 1 and 3) and a small Smoothness value to break up the flat digital colors with a natural glass-grain texture.
  4. Duplicate the bottom color layer, move it above the outline layer, and set its blend mode to Overlay with an opacity around 80–120. This deepens the shadows against the lead lines and makes the highlights pop.

Step 5: Final Adjustments

  1. Merge the layers by going to Image > Flatten (or press Ctrl + Shift + F).
  2. Go to Adjustments > Brightness / Contrast and slightly increase the contrast to simulate light shining through translucent glass panels.
