How to Import an Image as a New Layer in Paint.NET
Importing an external image as a new layer in Paint.NET allows you to combine multiple graphics, create photo collages, or add logos to existing projects without overwriting your original work. This guide outlines the two fastest and most effective methods to bring an external image file directly onto its own layer within an active Paint.NET canvas.
Method 1: Use the Layers Menu
- Open your base image or active project in Paint.NET.
- Click on the Layers menu located in the top navigation bar.
- Select Import From File... from the dropdown menu (or press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + I).
- In the file browser window that appears, navigate to and select the image file you want to insert.
- Click Open.
The external image will immediately appear on a separate layer directly above your previously active layer. The Move Selected Pixels tool will automatically be active, allowing you to drag the corners of the imported image to resize it or click and drag to reposition it on the canvas.
Method 2: Drag and Drop
- Ensure your active project is open inside Paint.NET.
- Open your operating system's file manager (File Explorer on Windows) and locate the image file you wish to import.
- Click and drag the file from the file manager directly into the Paint.NET window over your canvas.
- When you release the mouse button, a dialog box will appear asking how you want to handle the file. Click Add as new layer.
Managing the Imported Layer
After importing your image through either method, you can manage it using the Layers panel (press F7 if it is not visible):
- Reorder: Click and drag the layer up or down in the list to change whether it sits in front of or behind other elements.
- Rename or Adjust Blending: Double-click the layer in the Layers window to open the Layer Properties dialog, where you can rename the layer, change its opacity, or select a blend mode such as Multiply or Overlay.
