How to Hide or Show a Layer in Paint.NET

Managing layer visibility in Paint.NET allows you to temporarily conceal specific elements of your project without permanently deleting your work. This guide explains how to toggle layer visibility using the Layers window and layer properties, providing a non-destructive way to preview edits, isolate design elements, or export variations of your image.

Toggling Layer Visibility Using the Layers Window

The fastest way to show or hide a layer is directly through the Layers window:

  1. Open the Layers Window: If the Layers panel is not visible on your screen, press F7 on your keyboard, or click the Layers icon located in the upper-right corner of the menu bar.
  2. Locate the Layer: Scroll through the list of layers to find the specific one you want to hide or reveal.
  3. Toggle Visibility: Next to the name and thumbnail of each layer is a small checkbox:
    • To hide the layer: Uncheck the box. The contents of that layer will immediately become invisible on your canvas.
    • To show the layer: Check the box. The contents will reappear exactly as they were.

Toggling Visibility Using Layer Properties

Alternatively, you can manage visibility through the Layer Properties dialog:

  1. In the Layers window, double-click the layer you wish to adjust (or select the layer and click the Properties icon at the bottom right of the panel, or press F4).
  2. In the Layer Properties window that appears, find the Visible checkbox near the bottom.
  3. Uncheck Visible to hide the layer, or check it to show the layer.
  4. Click OK to apply your changes.

Hiding a layer does not affect its pixels, blending mode, or opacity settings. When you are ready to include the layer in your final project, simply turn the visibility back on before flattening or saving your image.
