How to Freely Rotate a Selection in Paint.NET

Rotating a selected area in Paint.NET is a straightforward process achieved by using the Move Selected Pixels tool combined with a right-click drag. While left-clicking with this tool moves the selection across the canvas, right-clicking enables freeform rotation around a designated pivot point. This guide covers the exact steps to select an area, engage the rotation mode, adjust the rotation center, and finalize your edits.

Step 1: Make Your Selection

Choose any selection tool from the Tools palette, such as the Rectangle Select, Lasso Select, or Ellipse Select. Click and drag across the canvas to highlight the specific pixels you want to rotate.

Step 2: Choose the Move Selected Pixels Tool

Select the Move Selected Pixels tool from the toolbar (represented by a four-way arrow icon), or press the shortcut key M on your keyboard.

Step 3: Rotate Using the Right Mouse Button

Hover your cursor over the selected area. Click and hold the right mouse button, then drag the cursor in a circular motion. The selection will rotate freely in any direction based on the movement of your mouse.

Tip: To constrain the rotation to fixed 15-degree increments for precise alignment, hold down the Shift key while dragging with the right mouse button.

Step 4: Adjust the Center of Rotation (Optional)

When the Move Selected Pixels tool is active, a small circular icon appears at the center of the selection. This represents the pivot point. If you want to rotate the selection around a corner or a custom point outside the center, click and drag this center icon using the left mouse button to a new position before performing the rotation.

Step 5: Finalize the Changes

Once the selection is rotated to your satisfaction, release the mouse button. Press Enter or Ctrl + D to deselect the area and commit the changes to your layer.
