How to Duplicate a Layer in Paint.NET

Duplicating an existing layer in Paint.NET allows you to experiment with adjustments, create complex blend modes, or preserve a backup of your work without altering the original element. This guide explains the fastest methods to create an exact copy of any layer using the Layers window, keyboard shortcuts, and the top application menu.

Method 1: Use the Layers Window (Quickest Method)

  1. Ensure the Layers panel is visible. If it is hidden, press F7 on your keyboard or click the Layers icon in the upper-right corner of the interface to display it.
  2. Click on the layer you want to copy in the Layers list to make it the active layer.
  3. Click the Duplicate Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers window. The icon resembles two overlapping sheets of paper (the fourth icon from the left).

Method 2: Use the Keyboard Shortcut

  1. Select the layer you wish to duplicate in the Layers panel to highlight it.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + D on your keyboard.

The selected layer will immediately duplicate directly above the original.

Method 3: Use the Menu Bar

  1. Click on the target layer in the Layers window to make it active.
  2. Click the Layers menu located in the top navigation bar.
  3. Select Duplicate Layer from the drop-down list.

Managing the Duplicated Layer

Once duplicated, the new layer appears immediately above the original layer with identical contents, blend mode, and opacity settings. It is assigned a default name (such as the original name followed by a number). To rename the new layer or modify its opacity, double-click the layer in the Layers window to open the Layer Properties dialog, make your desired changes, and click OK.
