How to Draw Straight Lines in Paint.NET
This article explains how to draw perfectly straight horizontal, vertical, and angled lines in Paint.NET using built-in modifier keys. You will learn how the Shift key restricts the Line/Curve tool to precise angle increments, ensuring smooth and accurate lines without manual alignment.
The Primary Modifier Key: Shift
In Paint.NET, the primary modifier key used for drawing straight lines is the Shift key.
When you select the Line/Curve tool (shortcut: O) and drag on the canvas:
- Holding down the Shift key automatically snaps and constrains the angle of your line to increments of 15 degrees (such as 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90°).
- This makes it easy to draw perfectly level horizontal lines, plumb vertical lines, or exact 45-degree diagonals.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Select the Line/Curve tool from the Tools palette or press O on your keyboard.
- Choose your desired brush width and style from the toolbar at the top.
- Click and hold the left mouse button where you want the line to start.
- Press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard.
- Drag your mouse to the desired endpoint. The line will snap to the nearest 15-degree increment.
- Release the mouse button first, then release the Shift key.
Adjusting Line Endpoints
After drawing a line, Paint.NET places control nubs at both ends:
- You can click and drag either endpoint nub to resize or reposition the line.
- If you hold Shift while dragging a nub, the 15-degree angle constraint remains active, keeping your straight line aligned while adjusting its length.
