How to Customize Color Swatches in Paint.NET

Customizing color swatches in Paint.NET allows you to store your most frequently used shades, maintain brand consistency, and streamline your digital artwork. By expanding the built-in Color window, you can overwrite existing preset swatches with custom values, save personalized palettes to your computer, and reload them whenever needed.

Step 1: Open and Expand the Colors Window

  1. Open Paint.NET.
  2. If the Color window is not visible, press F8 on your keyboard or click the Colors icon in the top-right corner of the workspace.
  3. Click the More >> button at the bottom of the Color window to reveal the advanced controls, including the color wheel, manual input sliders (RGB/HSV), and the palette grid.

Step 2: Replace an Existing Swatch

Paint.NET organizes swatches in a grid directly below the color wheel. To customize a specific swatch:

  1. In the palette grid, click on the color swatch you want to replace.
  2. Choose your new color using the color wheel, the RGB/HSV sliders, or by typing a specific Hex code into the Hex box.
  3. Once the color is set, click the small Palette icon (a folder-like dropdown menu) located just above the swatch grid.
  4. Select Add/Edit Palette or simply click the swatch again to assign the currently active primary color to that slot.

Step 3: Save Your Custom Palette

To ensure you do not lose your customized swatches when switching projects:

  1. Click the Palette dropdown menu above the color grid.
  2. Select Save Current Palette As...
  3. Enter a name for your palette and click Save.

Your new palette will now appear in the dropdown list, allowing you to quickly switch between different project palettes.

Step 4: Manually Edit or Share Palettes (Optional)

Paint.NET stores custom palettes as simple text files. If you want to manually edit colors using hexadecimal values or back up your swatches:

  1. Navigate to your computer's Documents\paint.net User Files\Palettes folder.
  2. Open any .txt palette file in a text editor like Notepad.
  3. Each line represents an 8-character hex code (AARRGGBB format, where "AA" is the alpha/transparency level, usually FF for full opacity).
  4. Edit or paste your hex codes, save the file, and restart Paint.NET to load your changes.
