How to Crop a Circular Profile Picture in Paint.NET
This guide explains how to quickly crop any image into a circular profile picture or avatar using Paint.NET. You will learn how to make a perfectly symmetrical selection, isolate your subject, and export the file with a transparent background suitable for social media and website profiles.
Step 1: Open Your Image
Launch Paint.NET and open your desired photo by navigating to File > Open, or by pressing Ctrl + O.
Step 2: Choose the Ellipse Select Tool
- In the Tools palette on the left, click on the Ellipse Select tool.
- Alternatively, press the S key repeatedly until the ellipse selection icon is highlighted.
Step 3: Draw a Perfect Circle
- Click and drag over the area of the image you want as your profile picture.
- Hold down the Shift key while dragging to lock the selection into a 1:1 aspect ratio, ensuring a circle rather than an oval.
- To adjust the placement of the circle, click the Move Selection tool (white arrow with four compass directions) in the Tools palette, then click and drag the selection outline to center your subject.
Step 4: Copy and Create a New Canvas
- Press Ctrl + C (or go to Edit > Copy) to copy the selected circular area.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + V (or go to Edit > Paste into New Image).
- Paint.NET will automatically create a canvas sized exactly to your circular crop. The area outside the circle will appear as a gray-and-white checkerboard pattern, indicating transparency.
Step 5: Save as a PNG
- Go to File > Save As (or press Ctrl + Shift + S).
- Set the "Save as type" dropdown menu to **PNG (*.png)**. Saving in PNG format is required to keep the corners transparent; saving as a JPEG will turn the transparent corners white or black.
- Click Save, review the default settings in the preview window, and click OK to finish.
