How to Create a New Blank Layer in Paint.NET

Adding a new blank layer in Paint.NET allows you to draw, edit, and composite elements without altering your existing image or background. This guide covers the three fastest ways to create a transparent blank layer using the Layers panel, the application menu, and quick keyboard shortcuts, as well as basic tips for managing your new layer.

Method 1: Use the Layers Panel

The Layers panel is the primary tool for managing image layers in Paint.NET.

  1. Ensure the Layers panel is visible on your screen. If it is hidden, press F7 or click the Layers icon in the top-right corner of the window to display it.
  2. At the bottom of the Layers panel, click the Add New Layer button (represented by an icon with a green plus sign).
  3. A new, fully transparent blank layer will appear immediately above your currently active layer.

Method 2: Use a Keyboard Shortcut

The quickest way to insert a new layer without using your mouse is through a keyboard shortcut:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + N on Windows.

A new blank layer will be added to the project instantly.

Method 3: Use the Top Menu

You can also add layers through the standard navigation bar at the top of the workspace:

  1. Click on Layers in the top menu bar.
  2. Select Add New Layer from the dropdown menu.

Managing Your New Layer

  • Renaming: Double-click the newly created layer in the Layers panel to open its Layer Properties. Type a new name in the text field and click OK.
  • Arrangement: Click and drag the layer up or down in the Layers panel, or use the blue up and down arrows at the bottom of the panel to change its stacking order.
  • Visibility: Check or uncheck the box next to the layer's name to toggle its visibility on the canvas.
