How to Check File Size Before Saving in Paint.NET

Checking the file size of an image before permanently saving it in Paint.NET is a straightforward process made possible through the application's built-in Save Configuration tool. This guide explains how to view real-time file size estimates for exported formats, adjust compression settings to meet target size requirements, and verify the resulting output before committing any changes to your hard drive.

Steps to Preview File Size Before Saving

Paint.NET calculates the prospective file size dynamically during the export process for compressed formats like JPEG, PNG, WebP, and GIF.

  1. Initiate the Save Process
With your project open, navigate to the top menu and click File > Save As..., or press Ctrl + Shift + S on your keyboard.

  2. Select the Target File Format
In the file browser dialog, choose the folder location and select your desired format from the Save as type dropdown menu (such as JPEG, PNG, or WebP). Click Save.

  3. Check the Save Configuration Dialog
Instead of immediately writing the file to disk, Paint.NET will open the Save Configuration window. In the upper-right corner of this window, directly above the image preview, you will see a label indicating the estimated output file size (e.g., File size: 245.8 KB).

  4. Adjust Settings in Real Time

    • For JPEG/WebP: Move the Quality slider to see the file size increase or decrease instantly.
    • For PNG/GIF: Change the bit depth settings (e.g., Auto-detect, 8-bit, 24-bit, or 32-bit) or adjust the dither level to observe how color indexing affects the total size.
  5. Finalize or Exit

    • If the estimated size meets your requirements, click OK to save the file.
    • If you only wanted to check the prospective file size without creating a file on disk, click Cancel.
