How to Center Content in Paint.NET

Centering an object or content within a specific layer in Paint.NET can be achieved quickly using built-in snapping tools or through an automated alignment plugin. Because Paint.NET does not feature a dedicated native one-click alignment bar, the fastest automatic results come from either using the Move tool's snapping guides or installing the popular Align Object plugin. This guide details both methods so you can achieve exact center placement every time.

Method 1: Using the Move Tool with Snapping (Native)

Paint.NET includes visual snapping guides that allow you to quickly position content at the exact center of your canvas without installing third-party tools.

  1. Select the Layer: In the Layers window (press F7 if hidden), click on the layer containing the content you want to center.
  2. Select the Content: If the layer contains only the object you want to center, press Ctrl + A to select the entire canvas, or use the Magic Wand / Rectangle Select tool to select only the specific object.
  3. Activate the Move Tool: Press M on your keyboard to switch to the Move Selected Pixels tool.
  4. Drag to Center: Click and drag the selection toward the middle of the canvas.
  5. Snap to Guide: As the center handle of your selection approaches the midpoint of the canvas, Paint.NET will automatically snap the selection to the horizontal and vertical center axes. Release the mouse when it snaps into place.
  6. Deselect: Press Ctrl + D to finalize the position.

Method 2: Using the Align Object Plugin (Fully Automatic)

For true one-click automatic centering, the free "Align Object" plugin (available in popular packs such as BoltBait's Plugin Pack) provides exact mathematical centering.

  1. Install the Plugin: Download and install the Align Object plugin DLL into your Paint.NET Effects folder (typically located at C:\Program Files\paint.net\Effects).
  2. Restart Paint.NET: Close and reopen the application to load the newly installed plugin.
  3. Select Your Layer: Click the layer containing the content in the Layers panel.
  4. Run the Effect: Navigate to the top menu and select Effects > Object > Align Object.
  5. Apply Center Settings: In the dialog window, click the center box (or select both horizontal and vertical centering options).
  6. Click OK: The content on that layer will instantly shift to the exact center of the canvas boundaries.
