How to Batch Rename and Convert Files for Paint.NET

While Paint.NET is an efficient image editor, it does not include native batch processing features. Preparing your images beforehand ensures seamless editing. This guide explains how to batch rename files using native Windows features and Microsoft PowerToys, as well as how to batch convert image formats using free dedicated utilities like IrfanView and XnConvert before importing them into Paint.NET.

Batch Renaming Files

Method 1: Using Windows File Explorer (Basic)

For simple sequential renaming, Windows has a built-in feature:

  1. Select all the files you want to rename in File Explorer.
  2. Press F2 (or right-click the first file and select Rename).
  3. Type the desired base name (e.g., Project_Image) and press Enter.
  4. Windows will automatically append sequential numbers to the rest of the files: Project_Image (1), Project_Image (2), etc.

Method 2: Using Microsoft PowerToys PowerRename (Advanced)

For search-and-replace, regular expressions, or custom enumerations:

  1. Install and launch Microsoft PowerToys.
  2. Select your images in File Explorer, right-click, and choose PowerRename.
  3. Use the search-and-replace fields to modify names, change casing, or add date/counter extensions.
  4. Preview the changes in the right-hand pane and click Apply.

Batch Converting Files

Paint.NET natively supports common formats like PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, and DDS, but does not batch convert files. Use external software to convert raw or unsupported formats prior to editing.

Method 1: Using XnConvert

XnConvert is a free, powerful tool for converting multiple images simultaneously.

  1. Download and open XnConvert.
  2. Under the Input tab, drag and drop the files or folders you need to convert.
  3. (Optional) Go to the Actions tab if you also need to resize or adjust color levels in bulk.
  4. Under the Output tab, choose your target format (such as PNG for lossless quality or JPEG for smaller file size) and select the destination folder.
  5. Click Convert in the bottom-right corner.

Method 2: Using IrfanView

IrfanView provides combined batch renaming and conversion in a single workflow.

  1. Open IrfanView and press B to open the Batch Conversion/Rename dialog.
  2. Select your desired Output format from the dropdown menu.
  3. In the "Batch mode" section, select Batch conversion, Batch rename, or Batch conversion - Rename result files.
  4. Set your output directory.
  5. Browse and select your source images, then click Add or Add all.
  6. Click Start Batch to process the files.

Opening the Processed Files in Paint.NET

Once your files are renamed and converted into a supported format:

  1. Open Paint.NET.
  2. Select all the processed files in File Explorer.
  3. Drag and drop them directly onto the Paint.NET window.
  4. The files will open as individual tabs along the top bar, ready for editing.
