How to Batch Process Images in Paint.NET

This guide explains how to batch-process multiple images simultaneously in Paint.NET using community-developed tools. While Paint.NET does not include a native batch-processing feature, you can automate repetitive edits—such as resizing, file format conversion, color adjustments, and effect rendering—by installing specialized community plugins like the Bulk Processor.

Step 1: Download and Install the Bulk Processor Plugin

  1. Visit the official Paint.NET Community Forums and locate the Bulk Processor plugin thread in the "Plugins - Publishing ONLY!" section.
  2. Download the compressed .zip archive containing the plugin files.
  3. Close Paint.NET if it is currently running.
  4. Extract the downloaded .zip file to locate the .dll file (typically named BulkProcessor.dll).
  5. Move the .dll file into your Paint.NET installation directory:
    • Standard Installation: C:\Program Files\paint.net\Effects
    • Microsoft Store Version: Documents\paint.net App Files\Effects
  6. Restart Paint.NET to load the new plugin.

Step 2: Prepare Your Image Folders

To avoid accidentally overwriting original images, prepare two separate folders on your computer:

  • Source Folder: Place all the images you intend to edit in bulk into this directory.
  • Output Folder: Create an empty directory where Paint.NET will save the processed results.

Step 3: Configure and Run the Batch Process

  1. Open Paint.NET.
  2. Navigate to the top menu bar, click Effects, and select Tools (or the specific sub-menu where the plugin appears) to open Bulk Processor.
  3. In the plugin window, set your Source Directory by browsing to the folder containing your original images.
  4. Set your Destination Directory by browsing to your output folder.
  5. Choose your target output format (e.g., PNG, JPEG, BMP) and configure image quality or compression sliders if applicable.
  6. Define your processing operations. Depending on your needs, select actions such as:
    • Dimensions: Define a fixed width and height, or scale by percentage while maintaining the aspect ratio.
    • Effects and Adjustments: Select specific Paint.NET filters, brightness/contrast modifications, or color corrections to apply to every image.
    • File Renaming: Specify prefixes, suffixes, or numbering patterns for the exported files.
  7. Click Start or Process to initiate the bulk operation.

A progress bar will indicate the status of the queue. Once finished, navigate to your destination folder to review the processed images.
