How to Apply Gaussian Blur in Paint.NET
Applying a Gaussian Blur in Paint.NET is a quick and effective way to soften an image, conceal sensitive information, or create an artificial depth-of-field effect. This guide walks you through the straightforward process of finding and using the built-in Gaussian Blur tool, whether you want to blur an entire photo or just a selected portion.
Step 1: Open Your Image
Launch Paint.NET and open the image you want to edit by clicking File > Open, or by dragging and dropping the file directly into the workspace.
Step 2: Select an Area (Optional)
If you want to blur the entire image or layer, skip to the next step. If you only want to blur a specific object, face, or section of text:
- Choose a selection tool from the Tools palette, such as the Rectangle Select, Ellipse Select, or Lasso Select.
- Click and drag over the specific area you want to blur. Only the contents inside the active selection boundary will be affected.
Step 3: Open the Gaussian Blur Tool
With your image (or selection) ready:
- Click on the Effects menu at the top of the screen.
- Hover over the Blurs sub-menu.
- Select Gaussian Blur... from the list.
Step 4: Adjust the Blur Radius
A dialog window will appear displaying a Radius slider:
- Drag the slider to the right to increase the blur intensity, or to the left to reduce it. You can also type a specific number into the input box.
- Watch the canvas in real time to preview the effect. A smaller radius (1–5) adds a subtle softening, while a higher radius completely obscures details.
Step 5: Apply and Save
- Once you are satisfied with the look, click OK to apply the effect.
- If you made a selection, press Ctrl + D to deselect the area.
- Save your finished work by going to File > Save or File > Save As.
