How to Add a Vignette Effect in Paint.NET

A vignette effect softly darkens the outer borders of a photo to draw the viewer's attention directly toward the central subject. This article explains how to quickly darken image edges in Paint.NET using the built-in Vignette tool, as well as an alternative manual method using gradients and layers for more creative control over the final result.

Method 1: Using the Built-In Vignette Effect

Paint.NET includes a native vignette filter that applies edge darkening directly to your active layer in seconds.

  1. Open Your Image: Launch Paint.NET and go to File > Open, or press Ctrl + O, to load your image.
  2. Access the Effect: In the top menu bar, navigate to Effects > Photo > Vignette...
  3. Adjust the Settings: A dialogue window will appear with two main sliders:
    • Radius: Determines how far the vignette extends toward the center. Lower values keep the darkness close to the edges, while higher values push the effect further inward.
    • Density: Controls the opacity and intensity of the darkened edges. Increasing the density makes the edges darker and more pronounced.
  4. Apply the Effect: Once you are satisfied with the preview, click OK to commit the changes.

Method 2: Creating a Customizable Vignette with Layers

For non-destructive editing or finer control over color and blending, create a vignette manually on a separate layer.

  1. Create a New Layer: Press Ctrl + Shift + N or click the Add New Layer button in the Layers panel to place a blank layer above your image.
  2. Set Your Colors: In the Colors palette, set your Primary Color to Black and your Secondary Color to Transparent.
  3. Select the Gradient Tool: Press G to select the Gradient tool. In the tool options bar at the top, change the gradient type from Linear to Radial.
  4. Draw the Gradient: Click and hold in the center of your image, then drag the cursor toward any outer corner. Release the mouse button. The center will remain clear while the corners turn black.
  5. Fine-Tune the Darkness: Open the Layer Properties window by double-clicking the new layer (or pressing F4). Lower the Opacity slider to soften the effect, or experiment with blend modes like Multiply or Overlay to achieve a more natural look.
