How Paint.NET Handles Images Larger Than the Canvas
When you paste an image that exceeds the current canvas dimensions in Paint.NET, the software automatically detects the size mismatch and displays an action prompt. This article explains the three choices presented by this prompt—Expand canvas, Keep canvas size, and Cancel—and how each option impacts your document, layers, and image resolution.
The Warning Dialog
As soon as you execute a paste command (Ctrl + V or Edit
> Paste) with an oversized image on your clipboard, Paint.NET
interrupts the action with a dialog box stating: "The image being
pasted is larger than the canvas size." You are then required to
choose how the program should handle the resolution difference.
Option 1: Expand Canvas
Selecting Expand canvas dynamically increases the width and height of the entire Paint.NET project to match the dimensions of the pasted image.
- The canvas boundary automatically grows to fit the new content completely without scaling or reducing its quality.
- Any existing layers will retain their original sizes and positions, with empty, transparent space filling the newly expanded canvas area around them.
- This is the ideal choice when you want the pasted image to serve as the new master size for your project.
Option 2: Keep Canvas Size
Selecting Keep canvas size maintains your document's original width and height without changing the overall project dimensions.
- The pasted image is inserted at its native, 100% resolution, but any portion extending beyond the current canvas borders will be hidden from view.
- The overflowed pixels are not immediately deleted; they still exist
on the active selection layer. You can use the Move Selected Pixels tool
(
M) to reposition the image or drag its corner handles to scale it down to fit within the visible canvas. - Once the selection is deselected (
Ctrl + D), any image data remaining outside the visible canvas boundary is permanently cropped and discarded.
Option 3: Cancel
Selecting Cancel aborts the paste operation entirely. Your canvas, existing layers, and clipboard contents remain completely unchanged.
