How Paint.NET Automatic Updates Work
The classic desktop version of Paint.NET, downloaded directly from the official website, features a built-in update mechanism designed to keep the application secure and up to date without requiring manual re-downloads. This article explains how Paint.NET checks for new releases, downloads installation packages in the background, prompts the user, and allows customization of update preferences.
The Background Update Check
Paint.NET periodically checks for updates in the background whenever the application is launched and an active internet connection is detected. It queries the Paint.NET update server to compare the currently installed version number against the latest available release manifest. This process runs silently and does not interrupt your workflow or degrade system performance.
Download and Notification
When a newer stable version is detected, Paint.NET automatically downloads the update package in the background. Once the download is complete and verified, a prompt or notification appears within the title bar or as a dialog box notifying you that an update is ready to install.
Unlike the Microsoft Store edition, which updates entirely behind the scenes via the Windows Store infrastructure, the classic version requires user permission to initiate the installation phase.
The Installation Process
Clicking the update prompt initiates the installation sequence:
- Application Closure: Paint.NET prompts you to save any unsaved work, as the program must close to overwrite core executable and library files.
- Elevated Privileges: A User Account Control (UAC) prompt will appear requesting administrator permissions so the updater executable can modify files in the installation directory.
- Execution: The updater replaces the outdated program files, updates registered file types if necessary, and optimizes assemblies.
- Restart: Once the update completes, Paint.NET can automatically relaunch, allowing you to resume working immediately on the latest version.
Managing Update Settings
You have full control over how Paint.NET handles updates through the in-app settings:
- Accessing Settings: Click the gear icon in the top-right corner of the main Paint.NET window and navigate to the Updates tab.
- Automatic Checking: You can toggle the "Automatically check for updates" option on or off. Disabling this stops background queries, requiring you to click "Check Now" manually.
- Pre-release Versions: An optional setting allows you to opt into beta and pre-release builds if you want early access to new features and fixes before their general release.
