Fill Transparent Areas with Paint Bucket in Paint.NET
Filling transparent areas using the Paint Bucket in Paint.NET allows you to replace the empty checkerboard pattern with any solid color or pattern quickly. By configuring the correct tool settings—specifically the Blend Mode, Flood Mode, and Tolerance—you can easily fill empty canvas space without leaving jagged edges or accidentally coloring over existing artwork.
Step 1: Select Your Color and the Paint Bucket Tool
- Open your project in Paint.NET.
- Select the Paint Bucket tool from the Tools panel on the left (or press the F key).
- Open the Colors window (press F8 if it is not visible) and choose your desired replacement color as the Primary color.
Step 2: Configure the Tool Settings in the Toolbar
Before clicking the canvas, adjust the settings in the top toolbar to ensure the paint interacts correctly with transparent pixels:
- Flood Mode:
- Choose Contiguous if you only want to fill a specific connected transparent section.
- Choose Global if you want to replace every transparent area across the entire active layer at once.
- Blend Mode:
- Ensure this is set to Normal. If you are trying to replace semi-transparent or partially faded pixels cleanly, switch the mode to Overwrite so the new color completely replaces any underlying alpha values rather than blending with them.
- Tolerance:
- Set the Tolerance slider between 0% and 15% for pure transparency. Pure transparent pixels have an alpha value of 0, so a low tolerance ensures the paint fills only the empty space without bleeding into the anti-aliased edges of adjacent shapes or text.
Step 3: Apply the Fill
- Make sure the layer containing the transparency is selected in the Layers panel (press F7 to view).
- Click directly on any transparent area (the grey-and-white checkerboard pattern).
- The transparent space will immediately fill with your chosen color.
If the color bleeds over the edges of your non-transparent artwork, press Ctrl + Z to undo, lower the Tolerance slider, and click again.
