Cycle Open Documents in Paint.NET with Shortcuts
Working with multiple images simultaneously in Paint.NET can slow down your workflow if you rely solely on your mouse to switch between them. Fortunately, the program includes built-in keyboard shortcuts that allow you to quickly cycle forward and backward through all open documents without touching your mouse.
The Primary Shortcuts to Switch Documents
Paint.NET provides standard tab-switching shortcuts identical to modern web browsers and image editors:
- Next Image: Press
Ctrl+TaborCtrl+Page Down. This moves your focus to the next open image to the right in your thumbnail strip. - Previous Image: Press
Ctrl+Shift+TaborCtrl+Page Up. This moves your focus to the image immediately to the left.
How the Document Loop Works
The thumbnail strip in the top-right corner displays all your active
files. When you navigate forward past the last image on the right using
Ctrl + Tab, Paint.NET loops back to the very
first image on the far left. Similarly, pressing Ctrl +
Shift + Tab while on the first image wraps
around to the last image in the list.
Tips for Faster Navigation
- Keep One Hand on the Keyboard: Using
Ctrl+Taballows your dominant hand to stay on the mouse or graphics tablet while quickly previewing different open canvases. - Reorder for Efficiency: You can drag and drop the image thumbnails in the upper-right corner to reorder them, making sequential navigation between specific project assets even faster.
