Configure Default Save Settings in Paint.NET
Paint.NET provides options to customize how images are compressed and encoded whenever you export them. While the application determines the default file format dynamically based on whether your project contains layers, it remembers your preferred encoding settings—such as compression level, bit depth, and color quality—for each specific file type. This guide walks you through configuring and persisting these default save settings for file types in Paint.NET.
How Paint.NET Handles Default File Types
Paint.NET determines the initial file extension during a save operation based on the composition of the canvas:
- Multi-Layer Projects: If an image contains more
than one layer, Paint.NET automatically defaults to its native
.pdnformat to prevent accidental loss of layer data. - Single-Layer Projects: If an image has only one
layer, Paint.NET defaults to the format the image was originally opened
in, or
.pngfor newly created canvases.
To change the default file format for any project, select
File > Save As (or press
Ctrl + Shift + S) and pick your desired extension from the
"Save as type" dropdown menu.
Configuring Save Settings for Specific File Formats
Paint.NET saves your export preferences on a per-format basis. The settings you apply in the configuration dialog become the new default parameters for all subsequent saves using that format.
- Open an image in Paint.NET.
- Click File in the top menu and select Save As...
- In the file explorer dialog, choose the target format from the Save as type menu (e.g., JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or WebP) and click Save.
- The Save Configuration dialog will appear.
Customize the parameters for your chosen file format:
- JPEG: Adjust the Quality slider to balance image fidelity against file size. You can also toggle chroma subsampling.
- PNG: Select the Bit Depth (Auto-detect, 8-bit, 24-bit, or 32-bit) and adjust the Dither level or Transparency threshold if reducing color palettes.
- WebP / AVIF: Set the desired quality percentage, select between Lossy or Lossless compression, and choose metadata preservation options.
- BMP / TIFF: Configure bit depth and color compression algorithms.
- Review the file size estimate and preview in the configuration window.
- Click OK to apply the settings and save the file.
Once saved, Paint.NET automatically stores these values in its user configuration file. The next time you save an image using that format, your previously chosen settings will load automatically as the default.
