Align and Space Text Evenly in Paint.NET

Paint.NET does not include an automated typesetting engine for vertical distribution, but you can easily achieve perfectly aligned and evenly spaced lines of text using built-in layout tools and multi-layer techniques. This guide explains how to format text using native alignment controls, position independent text lines with pixel grids and rulers, and use alignment plugins for automated spacing.

Method 1: Using the Native Text Tool Alignment

For standard paragraphs where text is contained in a single block:

  1. Add a new layer by clicking Layers > Add New Layer (or press Ctrl + Shift + N). This prevents the text from merging permanently onto your background.
  2. Select the Text tool (keyboard shortcut T) from the Tools palette.
  3. Look at the top toolbar to find the text alignment buttons: Align Left, Center, and Align Right.
  4. Click your canvas and type your text. Press Enter to create new lines.
  5. If the lines are not aligned to your preference, highlight or click within the active text session and click the corresponding alignment button in the toolbar.

Note: The native text tool applies uniform line spacing based on the selected font and size. Once you deselect the text tool, the text is rasterized into pixels and can no longer be edited as text.

Method 2: Multi-Layer Spacing with Rulers and Grid

To achieve custom, perfectly even vertical spacing between multiple distinct lines of text:

  1. Enable your layout guides by clicking View > Rulers (Ctrl + R) and View > Grid (Ctrl + Shift + G). Set the units to pixels under View > Pixels.
  2. Create a separate layer for each line of text:
    • Layer 1: First line of text.
    • Layer 2: Second line of text.
    • Layer 3: Third line of text.
  3. Use horizontal alignment on each line during typing (e.g., Center Align).
  4. Select the Move Selected Pixels tool (keyboard shortcut M).
  5. Select a text layer and move it to your desired baseline using the arrow keys:
    • Pressing an arrow key moves the selection by exactly 1 pixel.
    • Holding Shift while pressing an arrow key moves the selection by 10 pixels.
  6. Count your keystrokes to ensure identical vertical spacing. For instance, if you move the second line down by pressing Shift + Down Arrow three times (30 pixels), apply the exact same offset to the third line relative to the second.

Method 3: Using the "Align Object" Plugin

For automated centering and distribution:

  1. Install an alignment plugin such as Align Object (included in the popular BoltBait plugin pack for Paint.NET).
  2. Place each line of text on its own transparent layer.
  3. Select the layer containing the line of text you want to position.
  4. Go to Effects > Object > Align Object.
  5. Choose your horizontal orientation (Left, Center, or Right) and vertical anchor.
  6. Repeat this process across your layers to snap lines to identical margins across your canvas.
