What is Hotkey Focus Behavior in OBS Studio?

The “Hotkey Focus Behavior” setting in OBS Studio is a crucial configuration that determines how the software handles keyboard shortcuts depending on whether the OBS window is active or in the background. This article explains what this setting does, details its three primary options, and helps you choose the best configuration to optimize your streaming or recording workflow without accidental hotkey triggers.

Understanding Hotkey Focus Behavior

In OBS Studio, you can map keyboard keys (hotkeys) to perform specific actions, such as starting a stream, muting your microphone, or switching scenes. However, because you are often running other programs—like video games or web browsers—simultaneously, OBS needs to know whether it should listen to these keypresses at all times or only under specific conditions.

The Hotkey Focus Behavior setting, located under Settings > Advanced > Hotkeys, dictates this exact behavior.

The Three Settings Explained

OBS Studio provides three distinct options for this setting:

1. Never disable hotkeys

This is the default setting. When selected, your OBS hotkeys are “global.” This means that no matter what program you are currently using or playing, pressing a bound hotkey will trigger the corresponding action in OBS.

2. Disable hotkeys when main window is in focus

This option disables your OBS hotkeys only when you are actively clicking inside and using the OBS Studio window. If you switch to another window, like a game or a chat client, the hotkeys will work normally.

3. Disable hotkeys when main window is not in focus

This option restricts hotkeys so they only work when the OBS Studio window is the active, selected window on your screen. If you click away to a game, web browser, or any other application, your OBS hotkeys will be temporarily deactivated.

How to Change the Setting

  1. Open OBS Studio.
  2. Click on Settings in the bottom-right Controls dock (or go to File > Settings).
  3. Select the Advanced tab from the left-hand menu.
  4. Scroll down to the Hotkeys section.
  5. Use the dropdown menu next to Hotkey Focus Behavior to select your preferred option.
  6. Click Apply and then OK to save your changes.
