Use Green Screen Video as OBS Stinger Transition
This guide explains how to convert a green screen video clip into a transparent stinger transition within OBS Studio. You will learn how to prepare your green screen footage, configure the transition settings in OBS, and set the exact timing so your stream transitions seamlessly between scenes behind the graphic overlay.
Step 1: Convert the Green Screen Video to a Transparent WebM
OBS Studio’s native Stinger transition feature does not allow you to apply video filters (like Chroma Key) directly to the transition video file. Therefore, you must first remove the green background and convert the file into a video format that supports transparency (Alpha channel), such as WebM.
- Import your green screen video into a video editor (such as DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, CapCut, or a free transcoder like Shutter Encoder).
- Apply a Chroma Key filter to remove the green background, making it transparent.
- Export the video. Choose the WebM format and ensure you check the box to Include Alpha (transparency). If WebM with alpha is not available, export as a QuickTime (MOV) with GoPro CineForm with Alpha or ProRes 4444.
Step 2: Create a New Stinger Transition in OBS
Once you have your transparent video file, you can set it up inside OBS Studio.
- Open OBS Studio and locate the Scene Transitions dock.
- Click the drop-down menu (which defaults to “Cut” or “Fade”) and select Add: Stinger.
- Name your new transition (e.g., “Green Screen Transition”) and click OK.
Step 3: Configure the Stinger Settings
The properties window for your new Stinger transition will appear. Adjust the following settings:
- Video File: Click Browse and select your newly converted transparent WebM or MOV video file.
- Transition Point Type: Choose either Time (milliseconds) or Frame. This tells OBS exactly when to switch from Scene A to Scene B.
- Transition Point: Input the exact timestamp or
frame number where the transition graphic completely covers the entire
screen. For example, if your transition fully obscures the screen at
exactly 1 second, enter
1000milliseconds (or the corresponding frame number, such as30or60depending on your framerate). - Audio Monitoring: If your transition has sound, set this to Monitor and Output if you want to hear it in your headphones, or Monitor Off if you only want your stream audience to hear it.
- Audio Fade Style: Set this to Crossfade for smoother audio transitions between scenes.
Step 4: Test and Align the Transition
- Scroll down to the bottom of the Stinger properties window and click Preview Transition.
- Watch the preview to ensure the transition from the old scene to the new scene happens at the exact moment the graphic blocks the screen.
- If you see the old scene disappear too early or too late, adjust the Transition Point value up or down by small increments until the cut is completely hidden.
- Click OK to save your settings.
