Rename Audio Tracks in OBS Advanced Audio Properties

Managing multiple audio sources in OBS Studio can quickly become confusing without proper organization. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to assign custom names to your discrete audio tracks in OBS Studio. By naming your tracks, you can easily distinguish between your microphone, desktop audio, Discord, and music when exporting recordings into video editing software.

Step 1: Access the Output Settings

To assign custom names to your discrete audio tracks, you must first access the Output settings where track configurations are managed.

  1. Open OBS Studio.
  2. Click on Settings in the bottom-right “Controls” dock (or go to File > Settings in the top menu).
  3. Select the Output tab from the left-hand sidebar.

Step 2: Switch to Advanced Output Mode

The option to name custom tracks is only available in the advanced settings interface.

  1. Locate the Output Mode dropdown menu at the top of the window.
  2. Change the selection from Simple to Advanced.

Step 3: Name Your Audio Tracks

Once in Advanced mode, you can access the specific tab dedicated to audio track configuration.

  1. Click on the Audio tab (located next to Streaming and Recording).
  2. You will see text entry fields for Track 1 through Track 6.
  3. Type your custom names into the fields corresponding to the tracks you plan to use (e.g., name Track 1 “Master”, Track 2 “Microphone”, Track 3 “Game Audio”, and Track 4 “Discord”).
  4. Click Apply at the bottom of the window, then click OK.

Step 4: Route Audio Sources in Advanced Audio Properties

Now that your tracks are named, you need to route your actual audio inputs to the correct tracks.

  1. In the main OBS window, look at the Audio Mixer dock.
  2. Click the three dots (gear icon) next to any audio source and select Advanced Audio Properties.
  3. In the matrix on the right side of the window, you will see columns numbered 1 through 6.
  4. Check the box for the track number that corresponds to the custom name you assigned in Step 3. For example, if Track 2 is named “Microphone”, ensure only the column 2 box is checked for your microphone source.
  5. Close the Advanced Audio Properties window. Your custom track names are now set and will carry over into supported video editing software during post-production.
